BHEP/TERI FACULTY FELLOWSHIP

2007 BHEP/TERI Faculty Fellow

We are pleased to announce that Dr. David Blustein, Professor/Director of Doctoral Training, Counseling, Developmental, and Educational Psychology, Boston College Lynch School of Education has been selected as the recipient of the BHEP/TERI Faculty Fellowship. Dr. Blustein's research project, Charting Readiness for Entry to Adulthood: Identifying Risk and Resilience Factors that Promote Adaptive Transitions, will be conducted in collaboration with Brighton High School and the West Roxbury Education Complex. His project seeks to explore ways of defining "readiness for entry to adulthood" and relate the construct to existing indices of adaptive educational and career development within the Boston Public School community. The findings from this research will provide insight into the non-academic factors that influence students' academic success and college preparation.

With support from TERI (The Education Resources Institute), the Boston Higher Education Partnership (BHEP) awards the BHEP/TERI Faculty Research Fellowship. The BHEP and TERI are committed to improving college preparation, enrollment, and completion among Boston Public School students. To this end, the BHEP offers a fellowship to support faculty sponsored research in collaboration with Boston Public Schools. This fellowship is specifically designed to contribute to the Boston Public Schools' Whole School Improvement Plan through collaborative research that informs school-based practice.

Rationale

BHEP member faculty have the expertise and capacity to carry out research informed by BPS practitioners to address important educational issues in an urban setting . Such collaboration can ensure that research provides useful knowledge to the questions that arise in urban classrooms and schools and about the transition from school to college.

The BHEP/TERI Faculty Fellowship is designed to focus on a specific problem or issue related to improving college preparation, enrollment and completion for under-served populations. Research projects might address specific college preparation issues such as post secondary aspirations and planning or issues related to academic preparation for college such as performance in math courses. Preference will be given to proposals that address one or more of the district's school improvement goals.

Fellowship Award

Faculty Fellows will be awarded up to $30,000. The fellowship award may be used to support various types of projects including: applied research; dissemination projects, or demonstration research projects. Funds can be used to support the research in a number of ways including a faculty sabbatical, course buy-out, or summer salary.

Eligibility

The BHEP/TERI Faculty Fellowship is open to a faculty member at a BHEP member institution. Applicants do not need prior approval to conduct research in the Boston Public Schools; however, fellowship recipients are expected to meet the requirements of the BPS Office of Research, Assessment, and Evaluation.

Requirements for BHEP/TERI Fellow

No later than two months after tenure of the fellowship, fellows must submit a report on progress made during the year and present findings at a BHEP/TERI symposium.
